Sweeney Todd

The challenge:

To create a new orchestration which transplants the location of this extraordinary score to a more modern time while keeping the epic sweeping sound of this thriller.

The response:

I used three cellos and three woodwind to front a pallet of symphonic organ sounds mixed with warm analogue synths, electric pianos and orchestral samples. This was peppered with an array of percussion to define some of the more rhythmic elements of the score. The production favoured faster tempi throughout to give drive to help the thriller element come to the fore… no slow lingering romance here! Very proud to hear this come together without reverting to a chamber sound - truly epic in the amazing Quarry theatre.
